Stabilizing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the vaginal microbiome through the induction of glycogen metabolism. This involves stimulating glycogen production in vaginal epithelial cells using estrogen analogs like promestriene, which provides a readily available source of carbohydrates for LAB fermentation. This process supports LAB growth and lactic acid production, thereby maintaining a healthy vaginal pH and preventing pathogen colonization. Some LAB species also directly metabolize glycogen, enhancing their persistence and fitness.
Promestriene promotes glycogen accumulation in vaginal epithelial cells, providing a substrate for lactic acid bacteria to ferment and produce lactic acid, thereby lowering vaginal pH and inhibiting pathogen growth. Some LAB strains may also directly metabolize glycogen.
