Overview

Large ribosomal subunit protein mL37, mitochondrial (MRPL37) is a nuclear-encoded protein that is a structural component of the 39S large subunit of mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes), which function in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitoribosomes are distinct from prokaryotic ribosomes in their protein-to-rRNA ratio and lack of 5S rRNA, and their protein sequences often vary between species, complicating their identification based on homology. MRPL37 is associated with mitochondrial translation and, by extension, with the proper maintenance of mitochondrial function[1][4][5][7][9][11]. Disruptions in MRPL37 have been linked to mitochondrial diseases such as combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency and thrombophilia[1]. No drugs are currently known to interact directly with MRPL37, and it is not recognized as a therapeutic target.
