Overview

Lecithin:retinol acyltransferase (LRAT) is a microsomal enzyme that plays a critical role in vitamin A metabolism. It catalyzes the esterification of all-trans-retinol to all-trans-retinyl esters, which are essential for vitamin A storage and visual function. LRAT is highly expressed in liver and eye tissues, particularly in the retinal pigment epithelium. Mutations or deficiencies can cause early-onset severe retinal dystrophy. Overexpression has been observed in colorectal cancer.
