Leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) is a second-generation autologous platelet concentrate used as a bioactive scaffold in regenerative medicine [1, 5]. It is produced by centrifuging a patient's own blood without anticoagulants, resulting in a dense, three-dimensional fibrin matrix that traps a high concentration of platelets and leukocytes [3, 7]. This matrix acts as a reservoir for the sustained release of essential growth factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), which promote angiogenesis, cell migration, and tissue repair [5, 11]. L-PRF is widely applied in dental, orthopedic, and wound care settings to accelerate the healing of hard and soft tissues [6, 8, 9]. Unlike earlier platelet concentrates, L-PRF provides a more stable fibrin architecture and a prolonged release profile of bioactive molecules, enhancing its therapeutic efficacy in complex wound management and bone grafting [1, 13].
L-PRF functions by providing a fibrin scaffold that slowly releases endogenous growth factors and cytokines, facilitating cell recruitment and tissue regeneration [1, 5].
