A light-adjustable intraocular lens (LAL) is an implantable **device** for the correction of refractive errors following cataract surgery. The lens is manufactured using polymers (typically silicone or acrylate-based) containing photo-reactive groups. After surgical implantation and initial healing, the lens's refractive properties can be altered non-invasively by focused ultraviolet light exposure in the clinic. The UV light selectively initiates polymerization of macromers within the lens, resulting in changes to the refractive index and curvature according to a customized prescription for the patient. Once optimal vision is achieved, a final light exposure step stabilizes ('locks-in') the lens shape and power[4][2][6]. This approach allows post-operative adjustment of vision without further surgery, significantly improving patient outcomes after cataract surgery or in cases of post-surgical ametropia.
