The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigen is a major component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative Vibrio bacteria. It consists of Lipid A, Core polysaccharide, and a variable O-antigen (O-specific polysaccharide). LPS contributes to structural integrity, protects against bile salts and antibiotics, and is a key antigenic determinant for serogroup classification. It elicits strong immune responses and serves as a target for vibriocidal antibodies. The variable O-antigen is the basis for serotyping and is crucial for immune evasion.
