Overview

Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped organs that are part of the lymphatic system, playing a crucial role in the body's immune response. Sentinel lymph node mapping identifies the first lymph node(s) to which cancer cells are most likely to spread from a primary tumor. This process underpins sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), where these specific nodes are identified, removed, and examined for metastatic cancer cells. Lymph nodes act as filters and serve as early sites for metastasis. Detection methods include blue dye injection and radiotracer injection, often combined for higher accuracy. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is less invasive than full nodal dissection, offering fewer complications.
