Overview
The lymphatic system, specifically the sentinel lymph node (SLN), is an anatomical target critical for oncologic staging. The SLN is the first lymph node or group of nodes to which cancer cells are most likely to spread from a primary tumor. Localization techniques, such as dual-modality imaging using Tc-99m radiocolloid and blue dye, or fluorescence-guided surgery with ICG, are used to identify and biopsy the SLN. This allows for accurate assessment of regional metastasis and informs treatment decisions, potentially avoiding more extensive surgical procedures like full nodal dissection.
