Gingipains are a family of cysteine proteinases secreted by *Porphyromonas gingivalis*. They are virulence factors involved in adherence, tissue destruction, immune modulation, and nutrient acquisition. They are classified as arginine-specific (RgpA, RgpB) or lysine-specific (Kgp), based on their substrate specificity. Gingipains are implicated in periodontal disease and other systemic conditions like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. They represent a potential therapeutic target for treating these diseases.
