Overview

Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles central to immune cell function but are not a single molecular target. In immune cells, lysosomes degrade proteins and pathogens through hydrolytic enzymes, and regulate antigen processing and presentation via MHC molecules, especially in dendritic cells and macrophages[1][4]. Lysosomal acid hydrolases, most notably cathepsins, are essential for antigen processing, cell signaling, cytokine secretion, and both cell survival and cell death pathways, including lysosomal-dependent cell death[1][3][6]. Lysosomes also integrate with immune signaling (such as Toll-like receptor signaling), support autophagy, and modulate immune cell migration and differentiation[2][4]. Their broad roles make them functionally crucial, but "lysosomal function in immune cells" is not a discrete therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or gene, but rather describes a vital process involving multiple molecular actors and pathways[1][4][5].
