Major capsid protein L1 (Human papillomavirus type 6) (L1)

Target
L1
Molecular classification
Other (Viral structural protein)
01

Overview

Major capsid protein L1 of Human papillomavirus type 6 is the primary structural protein forming the outer icosahedral shell of the HPV6 virus particle. L1 self-assembles into pentameric capsomers that interconnect via disulfide bonds to form a stable, 72-pentamer capsid of approximately 50 nm diameter, essential for encapsidating and protecting the viral genome. L1 is the immunodominant antigen in licensed HPV vaccines, as it elicits neutralizing antibodies that prevent viral entry into host cells. HPV6 is clinically significant as a leading cause of benign genital warts and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, making the L1 protein a major target in prophylactic immunization strategies.
