Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) Class I and II (MHC Class I/II)

Target
MHC Class I/II
Molecular classification
Receptor, Cell Surface Receptor
01

Overview

Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class I and II molecules are cell surface receptors that play a crucial role in antigen presentation to T cells, initiating adaptive immune responses. MHC class I presents intracellular antigens to CD8+ cytotoxic T cells, while MHC class II presents extracellular antigens to CD4+ helper T cells. In cancer, MHC-mediated antigen presentation on dendritic cells is essential for priming anti-tumor immunity. Deficiencies in MHC expression or antigen processing can lead to immune evasion and therapy resistance. Strategies to enhance antigen presentation are being explored as cancer immunotherapies.

Mechanism of action

MHC class I and II molecules present processed antigens to T cells, leading to T cell activation and subsequent immune responses. MHC-I presents antigens to CD8+ T cells, leading to cytotoxic T cell responses. MHC-II presents antigens to CD4+ T cells, leading to helper T cell responses.
