HLA-B7 is a specific allele of the human MHC class I molecules, which are cell surface proteins found on all nucleated cells. These molecules play a central role in adaptive immunity by presenting intracellularly derived antigenic peptides to cytotoxic CD8+ T cells. HLA-B7 presents endogenous peptides to CD8+ T cells, triggering apoptosis in infected or abnormal cells. It is highly polymorphic, affecting peptide binding specificity and immune response diversity. HLA-B7 typing is critical for organ transplantation compatibility assessments and is associated with certain diseases like type 1 diabetes.
