Malonyl-CoA-acyl carrier protein transacylase, mitochondrial (MCAT) is an enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of the malonyl group from malonyl-CoA to the acyl carrier protein (ACP) during mitochondrial fatty acid synthesis. This reaction is a critical step for the initiation and elongation of fatty acid chains within mitochondria, distinct from cytoplasmic fatty acid biosynthesis. MCAT is classified as an acyltransferase and is encoded by the MCAT gene in humans. It plays an essential role in mitochondrial lipid metabolism necessary for energy production, membrane biosynthesis, and overall mitochondrial function. Although not a common direct drug target, defects in MCAT function can contribute to metabolic and mitochondrial diseases.
