Maltase-glucoamylase (MGAM) is a key enzyme complex anchored to the brush border membrane of the small intestine (UniProt: P50406). It is responsible for the final step of starch digestion, specifically the hydrolysis of alpha-1,4-glycosidic linkages in maltose and malto-oligosaccharides to release free glucose (PubMed: 12675937). This enzyme is a member of the glycosyl hydrolase family 31 and works alongside sucrase-isomaltase to ensure complete carbohydrate breakdown (NCBI Gene: 4266). Clinically, MGAM is a primary target for alpha-glucosidase inhibitors like acarbose and miglitol, which are used to manage type 2 diabetes by slowing glucose absorption and reducing postprandial hyperglycemia (StatPearls: Alpha-Glucosidase Inhibitors).
