Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace element actively transported into hepatocytes (liver cells), where it is processed and eventually excreted into bile. The liver plays a central role in regulating whole-body manganese homeostasis. Manganese-based compounds are used as contrast agents for MRI imaging due to their paramagnetic properties. Excess accumulation can lead to toxicity affecting neurological function.
