Overview

MAPT intronic transcript 1 (MAPT-IT1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) arising from an intronic region of the *MAPT* (microtubule associated protein tau) gene. It is non-protein coding and is relatively highly expressed in brain tissue, suggesting potential roles in the regulation of gene expression in the central nervous system[2]. Although the biological functions of MAPT-IT1 are not well characterized, it may contribute to the cis or trans regulation of coding genes, chromatin state, RNA stability, or alternative splicing, as is typical of lncRNAs. Its specific disease associations and regulatory roles remain unclear, but given the function of the parent *MAPT* gene in neurodegeneration, MAPT-IT1 may be relevant as a subject for further research in brain function and neurological disease[2][7]. No evidence supports that MAPT-IT1 is a direct target for current drugs, nor is it used clinically as a biomarker or target for intervention. Its significance is mainly as a putative regulatory RNA within the genetic architecture influencing tau and related neurological pathways[2].
