Overview

Measles morbillivirus, Mumps orthorubulavirus, and Rubella virus are three distinct viral pathogens that are the causative agents of measles, mumps, and rubella, respectively (CDC, 2020). Measles and mumps are negative-sense single-stranded RNA viruses belonging to the Paramyxoviridae family, whereas Rubella virus is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus in the Matonaviridae family (StatPearls, 2023). These viruses are clinically grouped as a single target for the trivalent MMR vaccine, which utilizes live-attenuated strains to stimulate the production of neutralizing antibodies and cell-mediated immunity (FDA, 2020). Measles is highly contagious and can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis, while Rubella is particularly dangerous during pregnancy due to the risk of Congenital Rubella Syndrome (WHO, 2023). Because this entry combines three separate biological species into one entity, it is considered a vaccine target rather than a single molecular receptor or enzyme. Therapeutic management of active infections is primarily supportive, making preventative immunization the cornerstone of clinical intervention.
