Overview

Measles, mumps, and rubella viruses are three distinct viral pathogens that are the causative agents of highly contagious systemic diseases in humans (CDC, 2020). Measles and mumps viruses are members of the Paramyxoviridae family, characterized by single-stranded, negative-sense RNA genomes, while rubella virus is a member of the Matonaviridae family with a positive-sense RNA genome (StatPearls, 2023). These viruses are not individual molecular targets like receptors or enzymes; rather, they are biological entities targeted by the trivalent MMR vaccine for the prevention of infection (WHO, 2023). The vaccine utilizes live-attenuated strains of each virus to stimulate the host immune system, leading to the production of neutralizing antibodies and memory T-cells (NIH, 2021). While no specific small-molecule antivirals are standard for these infections, vitamin A is used in measles management to reduce complications, and immune globulin can be used for post-exposure prophylaxis (Mayo Clinic, 2023). The primary clinical focus remains on high vaccination coverage to maintain herd immunity and prevent outbreaks of these potentially severe diseases (CDC, 2020).
