Overview

Mercury(II) ion (Hg²⁺) is a highly toxic divalent metal cation and a prominent environmental pollutant that poses significant risks to human health (World Health Organization, 2017). It is not a therapeutic target in the conventional biological sense; instead, it is a primary analyte in the field of chemosensing, where researchers develop specialized molecular probes for its detection in water and biological samples (Chemical Reviews, 2012). Biologically, Hg²⁺ exhibits high affinity for thiol-containing ligands, such as glutathione and cysteine residues in proteins, leading to enzyme inhibition and cellular oxidative stress (PubChem, CID 26658). Chronic or acute exposure to Hg²⁺ can result in severe neurological damage, including Minamata disease, as well as nephrotoxicity and cardiovascular issues (NIH, 2023). While not a drug target, Hg²⁺ is the subject of chelation therapy, where drugs like Succimer (Chemet) or Dimercaprol bind the ion to facilitate its clearance from the body (StatPearls, 2023).
