This receptor is highly expressed in cerebellar Purkinje cells and is fundamental for motor coordination and the induction of long-term depression (LTD) at parallel fiber-Purkinje cell synapses. Clinically, mGluR1 is linked to neurodegenerative disorders such as spinocerebellar ataxia and psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia, making it a significant target for drug development (PubMed: 15140638).
