Microbial Cell Components via Oxidative Damage (Active Chlorine Release)

Molecular classification
Proteins, Lipids, Nucleic Acids, Carbohydrates
01

Overview

Microbial cell components represent the ensemble of molecules and structures within microbial cells that are susceptible to damage by oxidative stress induced by active chlorine species, primarily hypochlorous acid (HOCl). This non-selective mechanism targets essential biomolecules such as proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates, leading to disruption of cellular functions and ultimately cell death. Active chlorine is used in disinfection and as a key component of the innate immune response.
