Microbial Cell Membrane (Disruption)

Molecular classification
Phospholipid Bilayer, Lipid Membrane, Cell Membrane
01

Overview

The microbial cell membrane is a critical structure in bacteria and other microorganisms, serving as a selectively permeable barrier that separates the interior of the cell from its external environment. It is primarily composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins and, in Gram-negative bacteria, an additional outer membrane containing lipopolysaccharides. The integrity and function of this membrane are essential for microbial survival. Targeting the microbial cell membrane is an effective antimicrobial strategy. Agents that target this structure can directly interact with the lipid bilayer to compromise its physical integrity, cause increased permeability or pore formation leading to leakage of cellular contents, or indirectly disrupt functions associated with membrane-bound proteins involved in energy production or biosynthesis.
