Overview

Microbial proteins, nucleic acids, and membranes represent the primary structural and functional targets for antimicrobial agents, including antibiotics, antivirals, and biocides (NIH, 2021). Proteins serve as enzymes for metabolism and structural components, while nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) carry the genetic information necessary for replication and protein synthesis (StatPearls, 2023). The microbial membrane or cell wall provides a physical barrier and maintains osmotic pressure; its disruption leads to cell lysis (PubMed, 2020). Drugs targeting these components work by inhibiting protein synthesis, disrupting genetic replication, or compromising the integrity of the cell envelope, leading to pathogen death or growth inhibition (CDC, 2022). This broad categorization is often used to describe the multi-target mechanism of action of non-specific biocides like alcohols and oxidizing agents, which cause widespread damage across these molecular classes (WHO, 2020).
