miR-X is a generic nomenclature and placeholder used in scientific literature to represent any member of the microRNA (miRNA) family, such as miR-21 or miR-124. MicroRNAs are small, non-coding RNA molecules (typically 19-25 nucleotides) that play a critical role in post-transcriptional gene regulation by binding to the 3'-untranslated regions (UTRs) of target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to their degradation or translational repression [1, 4, 8]. While 'miR-X' is not a specific therapeutic target itself, the class of microRNAs it represents is highly relevant in drug development, with numerous miRNAs identified as 'oncomiRs' in cancer or regulators of metabolic and neurological pathways [2, 20]. Additionally, 'Mir-X' is a commercial brand of microRNA quantification and synthesis kits produced by Takara Bio [6, 11, 22]. Therapeutic strategies targeting miRNAs include the use of antisense oligonucleotides (antagomiRs) to inhibit overexpressed miRNAs or synthetic mimics to restore the function of downregulated tumor-suppressor miRNAs [2, 12, 21].
