microRNA-1283 (miR-1283) is a small non-coding RNA molecule that functions as a critical post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression. It exerts its biological effects by binding to the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of target messenger RNAs, leading to their degradation or translational repression. A primary function of miR-1283 is the modulation of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response, specifically by targeting the activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) and GADD45A. In cardiovascular physiology, miR-1283 is essential for maintaining vascular endothelial function; its downregulation is a hallmark of essential hypertension and myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. In the context of oncology, miR-1283 acts as a tumor suppressor in various malignancies, such as glioma, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer, by inhibiting cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Although no miR-1283-based drugs are currently FDA-approved, therapeutic strategies using synthetic mimics to restore its function or antagomirs to inhibit it are being actively researched.
