Target intelligence / Profile preview
MicroRNA-130a-3p (miR-130a-3p) is a highly conserved small non-coding RNA that functions as a key post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression (PubMed: 18505921). It exerts its biological effects by binding to the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of specific messenger RNAs, leading to translational inhibition or mRNA degradation (NCBI: PMC4303452). miR-130a-3p is involved in diverse physiological processes, including angiogenesis, cell cycle progression, and the inflammatory response (PubMed: 23812637). In oncology, it acts as a context-dependent modulator; for instance, it functions as an oncomir in gastric and breast cancers by targeting tumor suppressors like PTEN or TGFBR2, while acting as a suppressor in other settings (PubMed: 25600157, PubMed: 30655338). It also plays a pivotal role in cardiovascular health, particularly in regulating vascular remodeling and the pathogenesis of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PubMed: 23812637). Research into miR-130a-3p as a therapeutic target focuses on the development of antagomirs to block its pathological upregulation or mimics to restore its expression in deficient states (PubMed: 28807595). While no miR-130a-3p-specific drugs are currently FDA-approved, it remains a high-interest target for oligonucleotide-based therapies due to its central role in disease-associated signaling networks (PubMed: 31431709).
Binds to the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of target messenger RNAs (mRNAs) to induce translational repression or mRNA degradation (NCBI: PMC4303452).
