Target intelligence / Profile preview
MicroRNA 150-5p (miR-150-5p) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule that functions as a key post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression by binding to the 3' untranslated regions of target mRNAs (PubMed: 17255511). It is predominantly expressed in the hematopoietic system, where it plays a vital role in the differentiation and maturation of B and T lymphocytes, primarily by targeting the transcription factor c-Myb (PubMed: 17255511). Beyond its physiological role, miR-150-5p is frequently dysregulated in various diseases; for instance, its downregulation is a prognostic marker in chronic lymphocytic leukemia, while its altered expression is linked to sepsis and cardiovascular conditions (PubMed: 21540467, PubMed: 24508230). As a therapeutic target, miR-150-5p can be modulated using synthetic miRNA mimics to restore its function or antagomirs to inhibit its activity in cases of overexpression (PubMed: 30103343). Current research focuses on optimizing the delivery of these oligonucleotide-based therapies to specific tissues while minimizing off-target effects and immune responses (PubMed: 30103343). In the context of oncology, it often acts as a tumor suppressor in hematological malignancies but may exhibit oncogenic properties in certain solid tumors, making its role context-dependent (PubMed: 25600653). Its potential as a circulating biomarker is also being explored for early detection of acute myocardial infarction and monitoring response to therapy in autoimmune diseases (PubMed: 23536304).
