Overview

Microtubules are microscopic, hollow, cylindrical polymers of alpha- and beta-tubulin that form one of the main components of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton. They maintain cell shape, enable intracellular transport via motor proteins (kinesin, dynein), form the spindle fibers essential for chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis, and provide structure for cilia and flagella, thus facilitating cell movement. Microtubules are highly dynamic, undergoing constant assembly and disassembly regulated by cellular signals and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). Their dysfunction or pharmacological manipulation is implicated in cancer, neurodegeneration, and other diseases.
