Microvascular smooth muscle refers to the smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in the walls of small blood vessels (arterioles, venules, capillaries) within tissue surrounding a burn injury (peri-burn). These cells regulate vascular tone, controlling local blood flow and perfusion. In the context of burn injuries, their response is critical for wound healing, influencing oxygen delivery, immune cell trafficking, nutrient supply, and waste removal. Dysregulation can lead to impaired vasoregulation, increased vascular permeability, edema, and ischemia. Targeting these cells pharmacologically aims to restore proper perfusion after thermal injury.
Varies depending on the drug. α-blockers inhibit α-adrenergic receptors, causing vasodilation. Nitric oxide donors increase nitric oxide levels, leading to vasodilation. Anti-inflammatory drugs reduce inflammation, which can improve microvascular function.
