Overview

MIR663A host gene (MIR663AHG) is a human-specific, non-protein-coding gene located in the centromere of chromosome 20[1][3]. Its primary transcript can generate both the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) MIR663AHG and the microRNA miR-663a through alternative splicing. The lncRNA MIR663AHG is predominantly nuclear but can be cytoplasmic, depending on cell type[1]. It is expressed at lower levels in colon cancer tissue compared to normal tissue, with downregulation associated with higher tumor stage, lymph node metastasis, and poorer survival. MIR663AHG also appears relevant to intervertebral disc degeneration and psoriatic inflammation. The function of this lncRNA includes the regulation of miR-663a, a microRNA involved in inhibiting cancer progression and inflammatory responses[1][3]. There is no evidence it encodes a protein, and its mechanism involves gene regulation rather than classical receptor or enzyme activity. Currently, MIR663AHG is primarily studied as a biomarker or functional regulator, not as a direct therapeutic target[1][3].
