MIR7-3 host gene (MIR7-3HG) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) located in humans on chromosome 19 and also known by the names C19orf30, LINC00306, PGSF1, and several others. It does not encode a functional protein but rather serves as the host gene for MIR7-3, from which the microRNA miR-7-3 is processed. The primary transcript of MIR7-3HG is non-coding, though in the past it was described as a "putative uncharacterized protein," current consensus and multiple databases annotate it as non-protein-coding. MIR7-3HG exhibits differential gene expression across various cancers. It is significantly upregulated in retinoblastoma but may act differently in other cancers, such as lung cancer, where it has been linked with downregulation of tumor suppressors like AMBRA1 and modulation of MYC. These effects suggest context-dependent roles in oncogenesis or tumor suppression; however, its exact biological functions and mechanisms are still being elucidated. While the microRNA miR-7 has known regulatory functions in cell cycle, development, and possibly pituitary-related processes, the MIR7-3HG lncRNA itself is not classified as a therapeutic target (such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or similar) and currently lacks associated drugs or well-defined mechanisms of drug action. Summary: MIR7-3HG is a long non-coding RNA, primarily notable as the host gene for the miR-7-3 microRNA; it does not encode a functional protein and is not a canonical drug target.
