Overview

MTND1P24 is a pseudogene related to the MT-ND1 gene, which encodes a subunit of mitochondrial complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase) essential for mitochondrial electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation. As a pseudogene, MTND1P24 does not produce a functional protein and has no established biological activity, molecular function, or role as a drug target. Most pseudogenes, including MTND1P24, are considered non-functional DNA elements—though some may play regulatory roles, none are recognized as therapeutic targets or directly participate in disease pathogenesis based on current scientific understanding. There is currently no evidence linking MTND1P24 to any clinical biomarker, therapeutic drug interaction, or safety concern. Pseudogenes like MTND1P24 are DNA sequences similar to functional genes (here, MT-ND1) but are generally noncoding and not translated into active proteins. Only the functional MT-ND1 gene (not its pseudogenes) encodes a subunit of mitochondrial complex I, critical for cellular respiration and targeted in some mitochondrial diseases; these functions do not apply to pseudogenes. MTND1P24 and similar pseudogenes are not considered “targets” in the sense used in pharmacology or drug discovery, nor do they have documented drug interactions, mechanisms of action, biomarker status, or safety profiles. There is nothing to indicate MTND1P24 is misnamed, but its designation as a pseudogene means it is not a functional molecular target—hence, some might consider including it in a collection of molecular targets "incorrect" in a drug discovery, translational, or clinical context.
