It is a nuclear pseudogene related to the mitochondrial MT-ND2 gene, which codes for a core subunit of the mitochondrial electron transport chain complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase). Unlike the functional MT-ND2 gene, which plays a crucial role in mitochondrial energy metabolism and is implicated in several mitochondrial diseases, MTND2P29 is not known to produce a functional protein, is not implicated in disease, and is not targeted by any known drugs. As a pseudogene, it is generally considered non-functional, and there is no evidence of its involvement in human disease, therapy, or physiology[2][4][6].
