MT-ND2 pseudogene 40 (MTND2P40) is a non-functional genomic sequence in the human nuclear genome that shares homology with the mitochondrial gene encoding NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit 2. Unlike its functional mitochondrial counterpart, this pseudogene does not encode a protein, is not known to be transcribed or translated, and has no established role in biological pathways or human disease. Such nuclear mitochondrial pseudogenes (NUMTs) typically arise from ancient insertions of mitochondrial DNA into the nuclear genome and are a common genomic feature in many species[3][6].
