Overview

MTND4P33 is a pseudogene corresponding to the mitochondrial MT-ND4 gene, found within the nuclear genome. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are generally nonfunctional due to mutations that prevent them from encoding a functional protein. MTND4P33 shares sequence similarity with the active MT-ND4 gene, which encodes a core subunit of mitochondrial complex I, a key enzyme in the electron transport chain and cellular energy production. However, as a pseudogene, MTND4P33 does not produce a functional protein and thus is not involved in normal mitochondrial or cellular functions. Nuclear mitochondrial pseudogenes (NUMTs), such as MTND4P33, can arise from the insertion of mitochondrial DNA into the nuclear genome, but these do not play direct roles in disease or serve as therapeutic targets[4].
