The parental gene *MT-ND5* encodes a core subunit of NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I), a crucial enzyme of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Unlike the functional *MT-ND5*, this pseudogene does not code for any protein and has no known biological activity[4][6]. Its presence may be relevant in the context of evolutionary genomics or when distinguishing between nuclear and mitochondrial DNA in genetic analyses, but it does not play a role in drug targeting, cell signaling, or disease except as a potential confounding factor in research.
