Mitogen-activated protein kinase 9 (MAPK9) in Leishmania donovani is a vital signaling enzyme belonging to the serine/threonine protein kinase family. It plays a central role in the parasite's life cycle, particularly in regulating the transition between the promastigote stage in the sandfly vector and the amastigote stage within the human host. MAPK9 is involved in sensing environmental cues and orchestrating cellular responses, including flagellar length maintenance and cell cycle control, which are critical for the parasite's adaptation and survival in the host's macrophages. Due to its essentiality for parasite viability and significant structural differences from human mitogen-activated protein kinases, MAPK9 is a high-priority target for the development of novel anti-leishmanial therapies.
