These transporters are responsible for the sodium- and chloride-dependent reuptake of monoamine neurotransmitters from the synaptic cleft back into presynaptic neurons, thereby regulating the duration and intensity of synaptic signaling [StatPearls: Physiology, Monoamine Transporters].
