Overview

The MSC secretome refers to the entire array of soluble factors—including multiple cytokines, growth factors, chemokines, extracellular vesicles, and other proteins—secreted by mesenchymal stem cells. This complex mixture mediates many of the paracrine, immunomodulatory, and regenerative effects attributed to MSCs and is increasingly studied as a cell-free alternative for regenerative therapies. Its composition is highly variable, depending on MSC source, culture conditions, and stimuli, and commonly reported major components include interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), monocyte chemotactic proteins (e.g., MCP-1), and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β). The secretome exerts effects such as immune suppression, anti-inflammation, tissue protection and repair, and modulation of angiogenesis, and shows promise as a therapeutic agent in a variety of inflammatory, degenerative, and injury-related diseases. However, the definition is too broad for single-molecule drug targeting, and clinical use raises issues regarding safety, batch-to-batch variability, and disease-specific effects.
