Overview

Mucin-1 (MUC1) is a high-molecular-weight, type I transmembrane glycoprotein that is abundantly expressed on the apical surface of mucosal epithelial cells. In cancer, MUC1 is often overexpressed and aberrantly glycosylated, leading to exposure of novel epitopes such as the one recognized by the BrE-3 monoclonal antibody. These epitopes are utilized for diagnosis, prognosis, and as targets for therapeutic antibodies and vaccines. BrE-3 is a mouse-derived monoclonal antibody (IgG1) that specifically reacts with a glycosylated epitope on the tandem repeat region of MUC1, a feature exploited in histopathological evaluation and prognosis of breast carcinoma and in preclinical studies of immunotherapy[3][7].
