Overview

Mucin-12 (MUC12) is an integral membrane glycoprotein belonging to the mucin family, characterized by extensive O-glycosylation, the presence of EGF-like domains, and localization on the epithelial cell surface[1][3][9]. It plays roles in the protection of epithelial cells, modulation of cell adhesion, and cell signaling, and may be involved in regulating epithelial cell growth[1][9]. Expression of MUC12 has been documented in various epithelial tissues, and it has been reported to be down-regulated in certain colorectal cancers[8]. Unlike some more extensively studied mucins, there are no known approved drugs or targeted therapeutics directed at MUC12, nor is it widely used as a clinical biomarker.
