For example, silver ions interact with thiol groups in microbial proteins and disrupt DNA replication, while iodine oxidizes key amino acids and fatty acids (StatPearls: Povidone-Iodine). This multi-hit approach is highly effective at reducing microbial load and preventing the development of resistance, but the lack of specificity often results in cytotoxicity to host tissues, limiting these agents primarily to topical or environmental applications (Lansdown, 2006).
