Artesunate acts by generating free radicals within Plasmodium parasites. These free radicals cause oxidative stress, damaging multiple essential proteins involved in DNA replication/repair (e.g., PfRFC1), hemoglobin degradation (e.g., falcipain 2), and antioxidant defense (e.g., SODs). This multi-targeted approach disrupts critical cellular processes and ultimately leads to parasite death.
