Overview

Musa acuminata potassium channel AKT1 (MaAKT1) is a Shaker-type inward-rectifying potassium channel primarily expressed in the roots of banana plants. It plays a critical role in mediating the uptake of potassium (K+), an essential macronutrient for plant growth, development, and stress resistance. Recent research has identified MaAKT1 as a key target of the phytotoxin fusaric acid (FSA), which is secreted by the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc TR4), the causative agent of the devastating Fusarium wilt (Panama disease). FSA induces the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in banana roots, leading to the S-glutathionylation of MaAKT1 at a conserved cysteine residue (Cys202). This post-translational modification inhibits the channel's activity, resulting in impaired potassium absorption, net potassium loss, and the characteristic symptoms of the disease, such as leaf yellowing and corm necrosis. Understanding the regulation of MaAKT1 provides a foundation for developing agricultural strategies, such as gene editing or chemical modulators, to enhance banana resistance to Fusarium wilt and improve crop yields.
