Overview

Mycobacterium species (Mycobacterium spp.) is a genus of aerobic, non-motile bacteria characterized by a unique, lipid-rich cell wall containing high concentrations of mycolic acids, which provides a protective barrier against many antibiotics and host immune responses (StatPearls, 2023). This genus encompasses several significant human pathogens, most notably Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the primary cause of tuberculosis, and Mycobacterium leprae, the cause of leprosy (CDC, 2023). These bacteria are known for their slow growth rates and ability to enter a dormant or latent state within host macrophages, necessitating prolonged multi-drug treatment regimens to ensure eradication (Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2022). Pharmacological intervention typically targets essential bacterial components such as the cell wall (e.g., isoniazid), RNA polymerase (e.g., rifampin), or ATP synthase (e.g., bedaquiline) (WHO, 2023). The rise of multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains remains a critical global health challenge, driving research into novel molecular targets within the Mycobacterium genus (PubMed, 2023).
