The refractory period in myocardial tissue is the time following an action potential during which the muscle is unable, or less able, to respond to a new stimulus. It is essential for preventing tetanic contraction, limiting maximum heart rate, and preventing re-entrant arrhythmias. The absolute refractory period prevents any new action potential, while the relative refractory period allows a stronger stimulus to elicit a response. Ion channels, particularly sodium and potassium channels, are key determinants of the refractory period's duration. Many antiarrhythmic drugs target these channels to modulate the refractory period and control abnormal heart rhythms.
