Nε-carboxymethyl lysine (CML) is an advanced glycation end product (AGE) formed by the non-enzymatic glycation and oxidation of proteins, specifically lysine residues. It acts as a ligand for receptors such as RAGE and CD36, triggering cellular responses linked to inflammation, oxidative stress, and tissue damage, particularly in metabolic disorders like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. CML is used as a biomarker for AGE accumulation and is being explored as a therapeutic target.
Binding to RAGE activates NF-kB pathway, leading to increased expression of inflammatory cytokines. Binding to CD36 promotes foam cell formation.
