N-alpha-acetyltransferase 38, NatC auxiliary subunit (NAA38) is a protein-coding gene that encodes a small auxiliary component of the N-terminal acetyltransferase C (NatC) complex[1][3][4][7]. This complex catalyzes the acetylation of the N-terminal methionine residues of proteins, a modification that helps protect proteins from ubiquitination and subsequent degradation via the N-end rule pathway[1][4][7]. NAA38 enhances the thermostability and substrate specificity of the NatC complex[2][6]. Functionally, NAA38 is predicted to bind RNA and is involved in the negative regulation of apoptosis[1][5]. It is localized in the cytoplasm and nucleoplasm, and classified under the N-alpha-acetyltransferase subunit family[2][4][5]. Currently, there is no evidence that NAA38 is a direct therapeutic target or that there are drugs which modulate its activity in a clinical setting[1][2][5].
