NDUFS5P1 is a *pseudogene* in humans and is homologous to NDUFS5, a genuine subunit of mitochondrial Complex I known as NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) Fe-S protein 5[1][5]. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences similar to functional genes but are generally noncoding due to accumulated mutations or lack of transcriptional activity. NDUFS5P1 does not encode a functional protein and is not involved in mitochondrial electron transport or redox regulation, unlike its parent gene NDUFS5. There are multiple pseudogenes in the NDUFS5 family, on different chromosomes. Functional importance and disease associations are specific to the genuine subunits of Complex I (e.g., NDUFS5), **not** their pseudogenes[5]. Key points: - NDUFS5P1 is not a therapeutic target, but a nonfunctional pseudogene. - Any disease or pharmacological relevance pertains to the functional NDUFS5 or other Complex I subunits, *not* to NDUFS5P1[1][5].
